Dear LinkedIn algorithm, we really need to talk.
Lately, you seem worried about me. Very worried.
You dutifully inform me that war is coming, AI will replace us, Europe is declining, cyberattacks are soaring, democracies are faltering, supply chains are about to snap and, overall, next Tuesday is looking tricky.
Thank you.I’d actually been having a lovely morning.
I understand your problem: you’ve discovered an age-old weakness in Homo sapiens and you need to sustain your business model.
Fear is remarkably good at holding our attention.
A threat? I click. A catastrophe? I stop scrolling. A map with three big red arrows? Irresistible. And the more I look, the more you conclude that I enjoy it.
So here we are, trapped together in a strange form of algorithmic couples therapy: you make me anxious because I keep watching, and I keep watching because you make me anxious.
So I have a proposal. Give me a button. Not Like. Not Follow. Not “Celebrate.”
An actually useful button : WORLD MOOD
A slider that lets me choose the tone of the world you show me.
0 — APOCALYPSE NOW Wars, collapses, hybrid threats, shortages, cyberattacks. As much red on the maps as possible.
25 — THIS DOESN’T LOOK GOOD The world is still burning, but someone has started looking for a fire extinguisher.
50 — THE REAL WORLD A war AND an agreement.A bankruptcy AND a new business.A drought AND an innovation in water technology.A problem AND the people trying to solve it.
75 — SURPRISE ME . Discoveries. Unlikely collaborations. People building, repairing, experimenting.
100 — ALL DAISIES AND SUNSHINE A river has just been restored. A species has made a comeback somewhere. Two enemies have talked to each other. And someone has rescued a hedgehog.
Let’s call it the Positivity Slider™.
Or, more seriously, a tool for attention sovereignty. Because you and other have spent twenty years teaching algorithms what holds our attention. Change your mindset.
Perhaps it’s time you let us decide what state we’d like our brains returned in after we’ve handed that attention over.
So I’m not asking you to show me a positive world. I’m asking for something far more radical: let me choose the window through which I see it. Free us.
Dear algorithm, give me back the button. I’ll handle the slider.
And share to my association bank account 20 % of the increased profit you will generate thanks to this revolutionary button.
Yours sincerely,
www.prosilience.ch
P.S. Never forget : I can switch off the electricity you depend on ;)
